Elementary - Baku International School

Baku International School's elementary program is designed to nurture student’s curiosity and motivation in their learning while supporting the mastery learning approach in gaining content proficiency. We strive to develop the whole child by engaging students in core subjects (reading, writing, mathematics, science and cultural studies) and special subjects (art, library, music, physical education, technology, and Languages Other than English).

Success Orientations

BIS believes that the Success Orientations are an integral part of every student’s day and are shown through the following:

Responsibility: Being prepared and on time

Concern for Others: Remembering that they are a part of a community and their actions affect those around them.

Kindness and Politeness: Using polite language, tone and behavior.

Aesthetic Appreciation: Noticing and appreciating the beauty around them, both inside and outside of the school.

Trustworthiness: Being honest and forthright

Group Interaction: Understanding how to relate to their classmates in a positive way.

Independent Endeavor: Doing their best, especially in the face of a challenge.

Recognition for success in these seven orientations is given five times during the school year on status reports.

Student Services

Counseling

Elementary counseling ensures all students are well adjusted, learn appropriate social skills, and receive extra support when needed. The elementary teachers and counselor work to create and provide a comprehensive social emotional learning program for all students.

Intensive English

Every QSI student has the opportunity to be successful in their learning, and students are expected to flourish in their classrooms. However, a student whose English proficiency level is below that commonly associated with their age may not be able to flourish in the mainstream classroom. The Intensive English program is designed for these students. The goal of the Intensive English program is to facilitate an accelerated learning environment in which students are able to acquire the English language skills in the four domains of speaking, listening, reading, and writing to be successful in their age-appropriate mainstream classes. Intensive English classes are smaller than mainstream classes to allow teachers to target individual student needs more effectively. The Intensive English program allows students to be successful at school and feel confident as learners.

Learning Support

BIS works with our regional Learning Support Coordinator to provide additional learning support to those identified with special educational needs. Staff work to implement recommended accommodations to their learning environments in order to be successful, and, when deemed necessary by the individual student’s needs, modifications to the curriculum. The school strives to do our best to provide the full conditions for all students, including those with special needs, to be successful in the QSI environment.

Extracurricular Activities

Extracurricular activities help students to learn about themselves and develop and use their skills and knowledge in different contexts.Extracurricular activities are offered for elementary students of all ages two or three times each week. Example activities include: Robotics, STEM, art, dance, piano, music, drama, crafts, yoga, Zumba, running club, karate, etc. Activities offered change 3-5 times per year.

A competitive sports program is available to students ages ten and up in accordance with SRAA and CEESA rules. Seasonal sports include: cross-country, soccer, volleyball, basketball, and track & field. A tournament between many international schools in the Caucasus concludes each seasonal sport.

Makerspace

A makerspace is a collaborative workspace for making, learning, exploring and sharing that uses high tech to no tech tools. Makerspaces are designed to challenge students to create and learn through hands-on, personalized experiences that help develop 21st Century skills. A makerspace provides the opportunity for our students to innovate, create real-world applications, be exposed to new opportunities, and develop critical thinking and problem solving skills. BIS has a fully equipped makerspace with tools and resources for students to make, create, and innovate. Our students utilize the makerspace one to two days per week to make, learn, and explore.

BIS is committed to teaching children habits and skills that help them to build character, manage emotional and social situations, and keep themselves safe.

Currently, we have a full range of lessons on Child Protection that we teach children of all ages. We also incorporate lessons to support the Success Orientations and Social Emotional Development of the students.
